What is Yoga?

Which Class Is Right For Me?

Although there are many styles of yoga, the differences are usually about emphasis, such as focusing on strict alignment of the body, coordination of breath and movement, holding the postures, or the flow from one posture to another. All of the styles share a common lineage. In fact, the founders of four major styles -- Ashtanga, Iyengar, Viniyoga and Bikram-- were all students of Krishnamacharya, the father of modern yoga.

No style is better than another; it's simply a matter of preference.

The following will describe the classes we teach at Spirit Rising.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga Marinate in seated postures to open tight connective tissues of hips, spine & shoulders. Most forms of Yoga practiced today are Yang, they emphasize muscular movement and contraction. By contrast Yin Yoga targets the connective tissue of the hips, pelvis and lower spine. Yin postures are held three to five minutes at a time. This type of practice complements the more muscular styles of Yoga and is a great aid for learning to sit in meditation. Don't let this scare you... Yin is defined as soft, hidden and slow.

This is a great way to unwind the mind as well as muscles.

Meridian-Yin Yoga - For All

Meridi-Yin Yoga Meridi-yin combines the resistance of Meridian stretching and the long holding and softening of Yin. A perfect balance to create range of movement in joints, increased flexibility in muscles and peace in the mind. Meridian yoga works to systematically activate and balance energy in the fourteen major meridians-- or energy pathways- of Oriental medicine. PNF/Resistance Stretching is scientifically proven to be the most efficient and safest way to elongate muscles and increase range of motion.

 Hatha Class - For All

Focus on peace, harmony and bodily awareness through coordinating breath and movement. Hat means sun and ha means moon therefore Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold (fire and water, following the same concept as the yin-yang), male and female, positive and negative. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical exercises, or "asanas", controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance & strength and are practiced to improve the body's physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment. Hatha class focus on breath, peace and harmony and bodily awareness.

Ashtanga - Moderate to Advanced

For those who want a serious workout, Ashtanga may be the perfect yoga. Developed by K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga is physically demanding. Participants move through a series of flows, flowing from one posture to another to build strength, flexibility and stamina. It's not for anyone who's been taking a leisurely approach to fitness. The Power Yoga is based on Ashtanga.

Beginner Ashtanga - Moderate

Ashtanga can be a bit overwhelming... with the warmth, all the upper body strength and everyone else knows what pose comes next. But we can break it in to a smaller bite. Find the powerful healing of ashtanga in a milder way in beginning ashtanga vinyasa. Whether you want to learn the ashtanga practice and move on, need a little slower pace, or just want to feel great on a Saturday morning, this class is for you!

Vinyasa - Moderate to Advanced

Vinyasa can be a fast moving practice. Linking breath with movement, we cultivate the awareness of how the body moves with breath. Vinyasa is a great cardio class building strength and balance. Class is never the same thing twice. We will find new places and spaces each time we come to the mat (just like each day brings)

Prana Vinyasa - Moderate to Advanced

The body has a certain intelligence to its movements... usting this organic nature in a flowing practice to cultivate a powerful grace. Based on Shiva Rea's prana flow, each class unfolds a new practice to open the body and spirit.

Hot Vinyasa - Moderate to Advanced

Hot room, cool flow. Based on Johnny Kest's style of sequenced flowing practice. Bring a desire to sweat and have fun.

Slow Flow Vinyasa - Moderate

The bridge between Hatha and Vinyasa, moving slower and softer than vinyasa, Slow flow has been designed to bridge the gap between slower hatha classes and faster vinyasa or ashtanga classes. Slow flow allows each student to flow thru a series of moderately challenging poses. Each series has been created to work thru lines in the body building strength, flexibility, and breaking thru energy stagnation. Once the lines are open, prana (chi, ki or life force) can wash through the body increasing harmony and health.
